Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California

Levi’s Stadium
Santa Clara, California

When the 68,500-seat stadium opened in 2014, it was the first NFL stadium to achieve LEED Gold certification. “Green” features include a recycled-water pressure booster system built by California Hydronics Corp. (CHC) using Bell & Gossett pumps, heat exchangers and other products that taps into the Santa Clara Valley Water District water recycling system. This eliminates the need to use fresh water to flush toilets and to irrigate the natural grass field, and green roof. B&G products include including Rolairtrol air separators, Series 60 inline pumps, 1510 end suction base mounted pumps, and VSX double suction pumps for the hydronic systems. B&G brazed plate and GPX gasketed plate and frame heat exchangers offer the highest level of thermal efficiency for the condenser water system. Mechanical contractor: ACCO

To keep the tundra unfrozen at the legendary Lambeau Field, temperature sensors installed below the turf field cue the hydronic system on frigid game days. Bell & Gossett pumps push glycol through piping and a turf conditioning tubing network. On snowy game days, a B&G pump-powered four-level snow melt system in the 30-story south end zone eliminates the need to shovel out that area of the stadium. B&G pumps have been part of various renovations and expansions at Lambeau during the last two decades. Mechanical contractor: Tweet/Garot Mechanical Inc.

U.S. Bank Stadium
Minneapolis, Minnesota

At work efficiently and seamlessly behind the scenes at U.S. Bank Stadium are a variety of Bell & Gossett pumps in the HVAC, plumbing and snow-melt systems throughout the 70,000-seat stadium that opened in 2016. A Bell & Gossett Technoforce booster package provides the 400 gallons of hot water per minute that are used to hose down the snow-filled roof, sending melted snow down concrete gutters through the stadium’s storm-water control system and down to the ground where it is drained into the city sewer. A B&G Technoforce XLS Booster Package supplies all of the water — 2,000 gallons per minute — to the stadium, including the 979 bathroom stalls. B&G VSX Series pumps are the primary feature of the stadium’s HVAC system, which supplies all the heating and cooling — 7,000 tons — to the stadium. Bell & Gossett rep: Mulcahy Co.

After horizontal split case pumps at The Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Administration Medical Center had repeated seal deterioration that required continued maintenance, they were replaced by Bell & Gossett VSX vertical split case pumps. The vertical orientation of the VSX means it takes up 40% less space than the old pumps — an important consideration in the pump room where space is tight. Downtime for maintenance is also reduced and the VSX pumps are meeting the high-flow requirements of the facility. Bell & Gossett rep: Hydro-Flo

Maintenance personnel were seeking replacement parts for a downed hydronic system in an older building recently acquired by the college. Bell & Gossett rep R.L. Deppmann discovered the system was running on a Bell & Gossett pump installed in 1954. The Series M1 pump had been upgraded through the decades with parts from its successors — Series 1510 and e-1510 — making replacement parts easy to come by. With the pump repaired, the heating system was up and running in hours.
